Footprints left behind by prehistoric people may be some of the strongest evidence yet that humans arrived in the Americas earlier than previously thought. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Over 60 \u201cghost tracks\u201d \u2014 so-called because they pop up and disappear across the landscape \u2014 show that people romped through what\u2019s now New Mexico 23,000 to 21,000 years ago, geoscientist Matthew Bennett and colleagues report in the Sept. 24 Science<\/em>. If true, the fossil findings would be definitive proof that humans were in North America during the height of the last ice age, <\/a>which peaked around 21,500 years ago.<\/p>\n When people first arrived in the Americas is highly contested. Scientists have historically thought that humans traveled across the Bering land bridge that connected Asia to North America around 13,000 years ago, after the massive Laurentide Ice Sheet<\/a> that once blanketed much of North America had started retreating into the Arctic (SN: 6\/26\/18<\/em>). Loren Davis, an anthropologist at Oregon State University in Corvallis, says that he would like to see the researchers use other validation techniques to check the dates before \u201cbreaking out the champagne.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThis is the kind of stuff that makes you rewrite textbooks,\u201d Davis says. \u201cFor the good of the field, we need really high standards.\u201d But if further verification confirms the age of the tracks, he says the discovery will \u201cshow us that people have this amazing ability to survive and thrive during a time when global conditions were extreme.\u201d<\/p>\n The tracks were created over two millennia mostly by children and teenagers wandering through the patchwork of waterways that defined the White Sands area during the Ice Age, the researchers say. The footprints were found alongside those of mammoths, giant ground sloths and other megafauna that flocked to water in the largely arid landscape.<\/p>\n Bennett is planning on returning to White Sands after the pandemic to continue studying human footprints, hoping to learn more about the people who made them. \u201cFootprints have a way of connecting you to the past that\u2019s like nothing else,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s very powerful to put your finger in the base of a track and know that someone walked that way 23,000 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n![\"\"\/](\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/wp-content\/themes\/sciencenews\/client\/src\/images\/cta-module-sm@2x.jpg\")
