Before the fire was even out, lab tests revealed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slvwd.com\/sites\/g\/files\/vyhlif1176\/f\/uploads\/memo_update_on_lab_reports_9.11.2020_cb_approved_0.pdf\">benzene levels<\/a> as high as 9.1 parts per billion in residential water samples \u2014 nine times higher than the state\u2019s maximum safety level.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time the carcinogen has followed wildfires: California water managers <a href=\"https:\/\/awwa.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/aws2.1183\">found unsafe levels of benzene<\/a> and other volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, in Santa Rosa after the Tubbs Fire in 2017, and in Paradise after the Camp Fire in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists suspected that, among other possibilities, plastic drinking water pipes exposed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/technology-natural-hazards-natech-disasters-lightning-wildfire\">extreme heat released the chemicals<\/a> (<em>SN: 11\/13\/20<\/em>). Now, lab experiments show that\u2019s possible. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Whelton, an environmental engineer at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., and colleagues subjected commonly available pipes to temperatures from 200\u00b0 Celsius to 400\u00b0 C. Those temperatures, hot enough to damage but not destroy pipes, can occur as heat radiates from nearby flames, Whelton says.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"680\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/122120_ms_pvc-wildfires_inline_680.jpg\" alt=\"burned plastic pipe and meter box\" class=\"wp-image-3094871\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption wp-caption-3094871\">A plastic water pipe (left) and meter box (right) recovered from homes in Paradise, Calif., after the Camp Fire scorched the community in 2018 reveal the degree to which plastics can melt when exposed to high temperatures.<\/span><span class=\"credit wp-credit-3094871\">Andrew Whelton\/Purdue University (CC-BY-ND)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When the researchers then submerged the pipes in water and cooled them, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2021\/EW\/D0EW00836B#!divAbstract\">varying amounts of benzene<\/a> and VOCs \u2014 more than 100 chemicals in some tests \u2014 leached from 10 of the 11 types of pipe into the water, the team reports December 14 in <em>Environmental Science: Water Research &amp; Technology<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome contamination for the past fires likely originated from thermally damaged plastics,\u201d says Whelton. It\u2019s impossible to do experiments in the midst of a raging fire to pinpoint the exact source of the contamination, he says, but inspecting damaged pipes after the fact can suggest what temperatures they may have experienced.<\/p>\n<p>Benzene exposure can cause immediate health problems, including skin and throat irritation, dizziness, and longer-term effects such as leukemia.
